I have to give a presentation in July as part of my final requirements for my master's. One of the books I'm excerpting is Iain Pears: An Instance of the Fingerpost.

My question is... what's the correct pronunciation of "Iain Pears"? My mental reflexes have been using "Ian Pierce." But is it Ian, Ee-ane, something else? And is it Pierce or Peers or Pares or something else? Does anybody know?

Thankee! I don't want to get it wrong. Not that he'll be in the audience, or anything. =D

Oh, you should ask Chris! Iain/e is Scottish for Ian (which, as you know Bob, is actually John.) I BELIEVE it's pronounced the same way. Pears is pronounced Peers. I know two people whose last names are Pearson and they pronounce it Peerson.

Couldn't it be 'Pierce' then? Or are you certain it's 'Peers' (as in 'Peerz')?

I could well be Pierce. Once you add the 'son' it probably would meld it together as peerz(son).
Email Chris. Do you have his addy?

I think I do, ayep. Although I've got a couple of months, too. I can always beat him when he shows up on LJ. n.n

By the way... funny you should say "As you know, Bob," because that's the title of my presentation. Serendipity!

Yep, Iain's just a Scottish spelling of Ian... same pronunciation. Couldn't tell you about Pears though.

Thanks, Chris!

I'll wing it on the Pears. What the heck. He can find me and beat me up later.
