Holy crap!

Syfy?

SYFY?

STFU! No, srsly. Syfy?

I'm so bummed! I was born in the wrong gender, and so am unable to appreciate and enjoy "the imagination space."

WTF? Siffy?

Is this an April Fool's joke? No...too early.

Why does the Sci-Fi Channel continually try to alienate its fanbase?

It really does read like an April Fool's joke.

But alas... I don't think so.

Honestly.

You'd think if they wanted to improve ratings, they'd... oh... fix the programming.

We'll to be fair they're pretty screwed from a SF viewership. They've canned or canceled most of the shows that were keeping people there, and SciFi rewind and other online sources are getting better views.

I mean there's the next Stargate:Retread, but BSG and most of their other shows are gone or fading fast, and the Eastern Europe cheap filming monster movies aren't really a big draw.

It's just stoopyd.

I think they must have use a computer generated naming machine because no thinking mind would come up with that crap.

I can't wrap my head around it. I really can't.

Not that I watch anything on SciFi (er... SyFy) but BSG and Ghosthunters. Their programming is too lousy.

I'll probably check out Caprica.

It just sounds too much like Sify, which is too close to Spiffy.

I watch the Spify Channel!

BSG is the only show I watch right now...... As of next Friday, even that will be gone. *sigh*

That's just Spiffy.

Will you watch Caprica?

When is Caprica starting, anyway?

And speaking of spiffy (but not skiffy or SyFy), I'm jonesing for our Tudors.

Amazing, isn't it?

I especially like the effective marketing strategy of alienating your core audience. ^_^

Mystery solved

One possible reason: "syfy" has very few hits on Google, so they'll dominate the resulting search.

Results 1 - 10 of about 135,000 for syfy. (0.10 seconds)

Another reason: trademark.

Bonnie Hammer, president of NBC Universal Cable Entertainment, told the New York Times, "We couldn't own Sci Fi; it's a genre...but we can own Syfy."

I have friends whose last name is Sy, only they pronounce it "sea." They're going to hate this.

Anyway, as others have said, it's about trademark. You can't trademark Sci-Fi. You can trademark SyFy. (I'm not business savvy enough to know why this is a good thing. So that they can make a killing on SyFy sweatshirts?)
